This presentation, which is scheduled for Thursday, January 23, 11:30 a.m. – 1 p.m. EST, at The Kaizen Center, 7100 West Jefferson Boulevard, Fort Wayne, IN 46804, will demonstrate how 3D scanning technologies, including Scan-to-BIM and drone scanning, enhance building accessibility, safety, and sustainability by ensuring compliance with standards like ADA, improving emergency preparedness, and supporting sustainable building practices. This year’s competition “Igniting Change” encourages students to think about how the design of a building relates to its surroundings and its community. Students will be asked to design a new fire station in a small historic downtown. This multi-dimensional program presents many layers of complexity for design exploration and should be an engaging challenge for any student at any skill level who is interested in art, architecture, drafting, or interior design. This design competition is an excellent vehicle for students to explore an interest in architecture and design, as well as a great resume builder. Through the Design Awards program, AIA Indiana asks a jury of peers to select projects by leading Indiana registered architects that serve as a tribute to design excellence. This year’s jury was from AIA Nebraska and chaired by James Walbridge, FAIA – Shive-Hattery. Other jurors included: Mike Hamilton, AIA – HDR Inc.: Kate Hier, AIA – Clark & Enersen; Kristi Nohavec, AIA – LEO A DALY; Ross Miller, Associate AIA – FormGrey Studio; and Patrick Moore, AIA – Goodlife Architecture. Join AIA Northern Indiana members and friends for the January Program on Wednesday, January 15, from 12:00 p.m. to 1:00 p.m. EST at the Chicory Event Center, located at 114 West 1st Street, Mishawaka, IN 46544. This event features a presentation titled “What Architects Should Know About Structural Engineering”, presented by Kevin Walsh and Molly Diveley of Frost Engineering. The speakers will explore the evolution of architecture and structural engineering from the master builders of antiquity to today’s specialized professions. They will also discuss the differences in educational and professional preparation between these fields and share strategies for fostering more effective collaboration in the rapidly evolving AEC industry. Insights will include research, personal experiences, and testimonials from industry colleagues. Attendees will earn 1.0 AIA Learning Unit (LU), and a complimentary lunch will be provided. The AIA Indiana Emerging Professional (EP) Friendly/Exemplary Firm Recognition is a newly established annual designation approved by the AIA Indiana Board of Directors in 2024. The goal of the program is to celebrate firms who offer exceptional support and opportunities for their early professionals. Additionally, the program seeks to foster a dialogue within firms across the state with the objective of creating new policies and practices that promote innovation, development, and progressive workplaces for the future members of the design profession. An early professional, or EP, is defined as someone who is part of the architectural staff, has been working in the architectural profession for 10 years or less and fills one of the following roles: recent graduate or unlicensed emerging professional. This accolade aims to provide a clearer, more accessible route for individuals pursuing licensure. Two designations were possible for a firm to receive: the AIA Indiana EP Friendly Firm or the AIA Indiana EP Exemplary Firm designation. See the list of award-winning firms below.
